Duplex stainless steels are extremely corrosion-resistant work-hardenable alloys. Duplex stainless steel plates contain high levels of chromium (18% to 28%) and low to moderate levels of nickel (1.5% to 8%). The high corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties of duplex stainless steels can be attributed to their chemical composition and balanced (duplex) microstructure with approximately equal volume percentages of ferrite and austenite. Due to this duplex nature it will exhibit the properties of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels. In most cases, duplex stainless steels are tougher than ferritic stainless steels. Duplex stainless steels can be twice as strong as austenitic stainless steels in some cases.

Duplex 2304 is a 23% chromium, 4% nickel, molybdenum-free duplex stainless steel whose structure is a balance of ferrite and austenite. It has similar or better general corrosion resistance than alloys 304L and 316L but has almost twice the yield strength of austenitic stainless steels. Its duplex microstructure and low nickel and high chromium contents also allow duplex 2304 to exhibit better stress corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316. It is generally suitable for all applications in the temperature range of -58oF to 572oF (-50oC to 300oC) and is designed for high mechanical strength, good weldability, good corrosion resistance, good stress corrosion cracking resistance, good machinability, and thermal expansion Small size, good fatigue performance, high thermal conductivity, easy manufacture and so on.
